Mr. Sherlock Holmes - An Introduction

This is a site for all fans of Sherlock Holmes - which ever version of the ingenius detective you like, whether you prefer the original Doyle version or one of the film versions.
It will also be a place to upload short fanfic - but remember, whatever you post, please keep it entirely clean and appropriate. Coarse language and porn/suggestive comments will not be tolerated. Thank you for joining, and most of all...have fun!

Here's a question to begin with. Who is your favourite movie/tv Holmes?

  1. My favourite version of Sherlock Holmes, from film and tv, has to be Jeremy Brett. He is my definitive Holmes...but as for the more modern versions, it's Benedict Cumberbatch all the way!

  2. I don't think Rathbone gets enough credit. Although, I agree Brett is great, Rathbone with the right material I believe would have been great.
Cumberbach is going to be a hard act to follow.
You didn't mention how you feel about Robert Downey Jr.

  3. Agree with you John. Rathbone was bogged down by a lot of factors including a canonically inaccurate Watson, low production values (lot of recurring actors), absence of Mycroft Holmes etc...

Brett is in my humble opinion, the definitive Holmes. I like Vasily Livanov as well. Other honorable mentions are Arthur Wontner, Rupert Everett and Ronald Howard.

The BBC series and the Downey Jr movies are a bit too non-canonical for my Sherlockian tastes :)

  4. I must say that I agree with you, buddy2blogger, when it comes to Robert Downey Jr. The movies are funny and quite interesting, but not exactly Sherlockian.

Question: In the Jeremy Brett movies, who is your preferred Watson? Hardwicke or Burke?

    1. @Reena - Both actors are equally good. Burke has the advantage of being young while Hardwicke makes a very patient and wise Watson. Really tough to pick a favorite :)

  5. I don't think you have to chose between Hardwicke or Burke, they were both great. And I bet most people could not tell you which one was in which stories, they both were just right as Watson.

Looking forward to more of your posts.

  6. Mr. Sherlock Holmes - THE MEETING
In 1881, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson met for the first time in St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Little did they know that it was the beginning of a legend - the beginning of a friendship which was to immortalise them both. But not all film versions of Sherlock Holmes portray that first meeting - and if they do, sometimes it is changed considerably. That poses the question: should all Sherlocian films be portraying at least some version of A Study In Scarlet, showing the meeting between Holmes - the ingenius detective - and Watson, his trusted companion?

    1. @Reena - Nice point. To the best of my knowledge, besides the BBC 'Sherlock', only the 1954 TV Series with Ronald Howard/Marion Crawford and the Russian adaptation with Vasily Livanov/Vitaly Solomin have covered the very first meeting between Holmes/Watson. In the Russian adaptation, Stamford takes Watson directly to 221 B Baker Street instead of St. Bartholomews...

      Cheers!

  8. Hi there! I'm a fan of the new stuff, but am totally open to new points of view. Have to say, BBC Sherlock is my favorite so far.
